Can pay, will pay
Article Abstract:
Women are becoming increasingly important in the mortgage market in the UK, and mortgage lenders are realizing that they can no longer afford to ignore women. More and more households are now headed by women, and the proportion of women in work is rising. In 1996, 16% of all mortgages were made to women on their own, from only 8% in 1983. Research indicates that women are less likely to default on their mortgage than men, even though a mortgage will often take a high proportion of their income.

Insurers still refuse to reduce charges
Article Abstract:
Regulations introduced in the UK in 1995 which oblige insurance companies to detail the charges they levy on their products have not led to a reduction in charges, according to a survey by the Personal Investment Authority. In 1996, average charges imposed by all insurers fell by 3.9% from 1995, but this was mainly represented by uncompetitive companies with products which are not very successful commercially. Most insurance companies have not reduced their charges at all.

How to be a winner in the home loans war
Article Abstract:
The UK's mortgage lenders are now competing increasingly fiercely to attract new customers and retain existing ones. This puts borrowers in a strong position, and it is possible to make considerable savings. However, it is still important to think very carefully before choosing a particular mortgage product. Discounts may seem attractive, but they may not be suitable for everyone, especially those who would prefer not to have changing repayments.
