Can you be sure of Ken Saro-Wiwa?
Article Abstract:
There has been considerable interest in the western world in the story of Nigerian dissident Ken Saro-Wiwa, who was hanged by the Nigerian authorities with eight other Ogoni activists in Nov 1995. He has been widely hailed as a hero, while oil company Shell, which he accused of being involved in the destruction of Ogoniland, has been portrayed in a very negative light. In fact, the truth is somewhat different. He is widely believed in Nigeria to have been accruing a personal fortune while managing the Niger delta oil port of Bonny during the civil war, and lost touch with reality when he became well known in the US and Europe.

Time to take the bull by the horns
Article Abstract:
Scientists are beginning to realise that wildlife will not necessarily achieve a natural balance without human intervention. This view is upheld by Dr David Western, director of the Kenya Wildlife Service, who has attracted controversy by stating that peasant farmers should be allowed to kill wildlife in certain circumstances. He believes that animal rights have been put before those of landowners, and that it is now time for landowners to be given a legitimate role in decision-making, moving away from an excessively sentimental view of wildlife management.

A green with spleen
Article Abstract:
Bruce Ames, environmental scientist, University of California, Berkeley, CA, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, is visiting London to collect a medal from the Society of Chemical Industries. The professor, who considers himself a cross between a geneticist and a biochemist, believes that about only 1% of cancers can be attributed to pollution and that cancer results from natural chemicals. Ames is a great proponent of fruit and vegetable consumption.
