Canny Scots plan NHS savings
Article Abstract:
Scottish hospitals are seeking to avoid the problems experienced by their English counterparts in installing computer systems. At Ayr hospital, for example, an integrated package linking the whole hospital has been installed at a cost of 1 million pounds sterling, and savings of 250,000 pounds sterling a year are expected. If these savings are not achieved, then the supplier will pay the hospital the money which should have been saved. At Law hospital, financial liability for a new computer system is being shared with the private sector.

Are you sitting on a problem?
Article Abstract:
There are currently around 1,400 new cases of testicular cancer each year in the UK, from 700 a year in the early 1970s. It is uncertain why the number of cases has risen, but some observers attribute this trend to increased levels of the female hormone oestrogen in the environment. There is a high success rate for the treatment of testicular cancer, but many men ignore the symptoms until the cancer has reached a relatively advanced stage. This makes the treatment process much more traumatic than it would otherwise have been.

Saving face
Article Abstract:
It is believed that around 65,000 people had some form of cosmetic surgery in the UK in 1995, of whom 90% were women. It is becoming increasingly common for ordinary people, rather than celebrities, to choose cosmetic surgery. In many cases, they feel pressured by a competitive, ageist society to attempt to regain their youthful looks. Experts warn that cosmetic surgery does carry risks, and potential patients should think carefully before going ahead.
