Caught between a wok and a hard place
Article Abstract:
Chinese restaurants are an integral part of British culture, but are also very isolated in their own way, according to Stephen Clark, author of the play 'Take-away.' The play deals with issues facing many families of Asian extraction, but Clark does not feel that it is a sociological tract. He did not experience any difficulties with writing a play for Mu-Lan, the UK's first Oriental theatre company, even though he has no direct experience of the Oriental way of life. Indeed, he emphasizes that people all experience the same emotions, regardless of their origins.

Making a drama out of a crisis
Article Abstract:
There is a very strong sense of history in nationalist areas of Belfast, Northern Ireland, according to playwright Pearse Elliott. He grew up seeing British troops on the streets, and developed a strong nationalist identity. This has affected his writing. Fellow Northern Irish playwright Gary Mitchell, a Protestant, has used writing plays as a way of exploring himself, humanity and his community. He is very keen to avoid a situation where his community are the terrorists in a united Ireland.
