UK Conservative Euro-rebel Rupert Allason, 41, of Torbay, Devon, was the only one not to vote in the vote of confidence in Jul 1993. He could not be found at his Fulham, London, home, his country home in Berkshire or his home in Bermuda. He has written many spy books under his pen-name of Nigel West, which are said to have made him a millionaire. Mr Allason is independent and has conflicted with the whips' office since he was elected in 1987. He attended Downside public school, Grenoble University and London University. He was a part-time Special Constable at Rochester Row police station, London.

UK Under-Secretary of State for Social Security Ann Widdecombe, a far right Conservative, converted to the Roman Catholic faith after the Church of England's decision to ordain women priests. Ann was born in Bath, England, in 1948, but lived in Singapore where her father was in the navy. She went to a Catholic convent school in Bath. She read Latin at Birmingham university in 1967 and took a further degree in philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford. She became a Tory councillor for Runnymede District Council in May 1976. In 1987 she became MP (Member of Parliament) for Maidstone.
