Changes could woo back small investors
Article Abstract:
Many of the UK's investment trusts have failed to match the performance of other equity-linked pooled funds over recent years. In some cases, discount to net asset value has risen to up to 15%. Investment trusts are seeking to overcome the discount problem through large-scale share buy-backs. This approach cuts the number of shares in existence, thus boosting the price of those still in circulation. In the long term, however, a trust's overall performance is likely to remain the most significant element in reducing discounts.

The Robin Hood budget
Article Abstract:
UK Chancellor Gordon Brown's 1999 Budget will bring most benefits to pensioners, particularly those who are not very wealthy, and to couples with children. Some of the tax measures contained in the Budget will have a negative impact on the financial position of the middle and upper classes, but these will be balanced out by tax cuts. It is very difficult to assess accurately who will lose and who will gain from the Budget, as this depends on a wide range of factors.
