Charities race to lure sponsored marathon runners

Article Abstract:

Charities in the UK are very keen to encourage people to run on their behalf in the Flora London Marathon, and are offering very attractive incentives to secure sponsored runners. The British Heart Foundation, for example, guarantees leading fundraisers a place in the New York City marathon, while Age Concern offers the opportunity to fly anywhere in the US. However, some charities cannot afford to offer rewards of this kind. The 1997 marathon raised around 11 million pounds sterling for charity.

Still no relief on charity tax plan

Article Abstract:

UK charities have faced a growing tax burden since the introduction of value-added tax (VAT) in 1972. They are now calling on the government for a rebate in the cost of VAT, along with more incentives for people to give to charity and simplification of the tax regulations. However, the government has made it clear that it will not or cannot meet calls for a VAT rebate. It has made alternative proposals for helping charities, including providing incentives for payroll giving.
