Charity begins again
Article Abstract:
Songwriter Cy Coleman feels that the famous song 'Hey, Big Spender,' which he wrote when he was seeking a point of entry into the musical 'Sweet Charity,' has a raucous feel but is also humorous. He is currently in London, England, to oversee rehearsals for a production of the musical at the Victoria Palace. He partly devised 'Hey, Big Spender' as a way of ensuring that choreographer and director Bob Fosse could not put actions in places that he regarded as inappropriate. He has always sought to ensure that his work is produced in a way he feels happy with, and sometimes produces his own work.

Still the man of distinction
Article Abstract:
Musical comedy composer Cy Coleman won two Tony Awards for Best Musical in successive years. In 1990 he won it for 'City of Angels,' which has film noir settings and a jazz score. When he was seven he played the piano and liked Beethoven, but later turned to jazz. In his teens he played for publisher Jack Robbins, who thought he was like Gershwin. He started 'City of Angels' with Larry Gelbart in 1982 but it did not open on Broadway until 1989. He is working on a major project, a passionate show about New York people, 'The Life,' with Ira Gassman.

Ring-a-ding king
Article Abstract:
Frank Sinatra developed an artistry in popular singing with his idiosyncratic style of vocal delivery, his way of holding the microphone to enhance diction and his interpretation of lyrics. Sinatra's singing was complemented by the trombone playing of Tommy Dorsey who accompanied his early recordings. His particular interpretations of songs have become the most memorable renditions, in some cases outdoing the original.
