The tragedy of Captain Webb
Article Abstract:
Matthew Webb had a lot of stamina for swimming. He joined the mercantile training ship 'Conway' at the age of 12 and then went into the merchant navy. He left shipping and trained seriously, swimming 10-20 miles along the south coast. He attempted to swim the Channel on Aug 24 1875 and succeeded after 22 hours in the sea. He took part in various swimming challenges but a race in a cold Lancashire lake left him exhausted. To raise money to provide for his family he undertook to swim through the whirlpool beneath Niagara Falls, but he failed to emerge from it.

Everything is going swimmingly
Article Abstract:
Until Victorian times everyone swam naked. Men and women were segregated at the beach but women were watched bathing. George III began the fashion of sea-water swimming for health and salt water was considered a cure for most problems. Resorts developed and as railways offered travel for the general public pleasure holidays began. Entertainments provided the opportunity to forget daily existence and live in a pretend world.
