China finds Hong Kong hard to swallow
Article Abstract:
Many Chinese people feel that residents of Hong Kong are too westernized and that they have little knowledge of true Chinese culture. This is particularly the case in the province of Guangdong, which borders Hong Kong. There is very strong Hong Kong influence in this region, with around 50,000 Hong Kong companies employing around 5 million people. The lifestyle in Guangdong is rapidly becoming very similar to that of Hong Kong, and its residents frequently speak Cantonese, the traditional Hong Kong language.

Taiwan fears betrayal by Washington
Article Abstract:
The Taiwanese government is taking great care to strengthen its diplomatic links with the US in the run-up to President Bill Clinton's visit to China later in Jun 1998. It is very keen to ensure that the US does not neglect Taiwan's interests as it seeks to improve its own relations with China. It is very aware that relations between the US and Taiwan have suffered a setback every time a US president has visited China. It insists that the US remains its closest ally.
