Chirac takes a pitchfork to farm subsidy revolution
Article Abstract:
French President Jacques Chirac has spoken out against the radical new agricultural policy proposed by Socialist Agriculture Minister Louis Le Pensec. Chirac believes that French farm policy should focus on boosting production and exports, while Le Pensec is seeking to base farm policy in environmental and social considerations, as well as economic ones. He wants to see farmers taking out contracts with the state, receiving subsidies based on their contribution to environmental protection. In contrast, Chirac believes that the state should not pass responsibility for the countryside on to farmers.

Chirac begs voters to save his presidency
Article Abstract:
French President Jacques Chirac has called on voters to reject left wing parties in the forthcoming second round of the general election. In this way, it will be possible to avoid an extended period of left-right power-sharing. He has emphasized that re-electing a centre-right government will bring considerable advantages, primarily in terms of making France modern and powerful. He hopes that making a direct appeal will encourage centre-right voters who abstained in the first round of voting to participate in the second round.
