China reaches across the sea to Taiwan
Article Abstract:
Relations between China and Taiwan have until recently been very strained. However, China is now making considerable efforts to gain the support of Taiwanese businessmen, realising that economic links could be vital in its efforts to regain control over Taiwan, which it regards as a breakaway province. There are now 1,300 Taiwan enterprises in Xiamen, China, the southern Fujian city which faces Taiwan, and a large proportion of Taiwan's low-level manufacturing is now undertaken on mainland China.

Taiwan's island outpost in the front line
Article Abstract:
The island of Quemoy, which has a population of 40,000 civilians and around 50,000 soldiers, is situated very close to the Chinese mainland, but remains under Taiwanese ownership. Its residents are nervous about the growing tension between China and Taiwan, especially as China prepares for military exercises nearby, but are determined to stand firm against Chinese threats. However, soldiers on the island are making extensive preparations in case there is an invasion from China.

China focuses on next great prize - Taiwan
Article Abstract:
There is currently considerable attention being given in China to the hand-over of Hong Kong to Chinese administration on Jul 01 1997. After that time, the focus will shift to Taiwan. China still regards Taiwan as a renegade province, and the government has expressed firm determination to reunite the country. There are many people in Taiwan who do not share this view, and they will be looking closely at developments in Hong Kong once it returns to Chinese sovereignty.
