Chorus of praise
Article Abstract:
Composer John Rutter gained the inspiration for his extremely successful 'Requiem,' written in 1985 in memory of his father, from Faure's 'Requiem.' He studied Faure's manuscript, and became aware that this was a very intimate work. This gave him courage to try to compose a similar piece. His aim with his 'Requiem' was to write a piece accessible to everybody. He denies that he composes with commercial success in mind, pointing out that he has devoted a large part of his working life to choral music, thus accepting certain limitations on the musical language he can use.

The other Lloyd Webber: eclipsed by his children and out of step with his times?
Article Abstract:
William Lloyd Webber was an accomplished musician, being especially respected for his brilliant organ playing. However, he never became famous, as his sons Andrew and Julian did. He was very unwilling to promote himself and make use of his contacts, so remained in relative obscurity. His sons believe that he was unable to break away from his very conventional background, being afraid that writing unusual music would be seen as unsuitable for someone born to working class parents.
