Clarke rejects jobs law to combat racism
Article Abstract:
The Home Secretary, Mr Kenneth Clarke, refused to act on racial discrimination when Mr Bernie Grant, Labour MP for Tottenham, London, spoke at a House of Commons debate on Jun 9 1992 about the 60% unemployment rate among black youths in his constituency. Cuts in the youth service meant they had nowhere to go and youth workers predict riots. Monitoring has shown that job candidates were often refused on race grounds and the possibility of forcing companies to recruit a set number of black workers to represent the population of the area was discussed. The Commission for Racial Equality would inspect payrolls for representation and government contracts would be removed from offenders.
