Clash of views on global economy kicks off world forum
Article Abstract:
Leading business executives attending the 1998 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, have expressed very optimistic views about growth prospects for their companies and for the world economy as a whole. In contrast, economists and market experts have been much more cautious, with some even warning of very difficult trading conditions. Institute for International Economics Director Fred Bergsten expressed the view that economic growth in Asia as a whole could fall to zero in 1998 and 1999.

Why the City should fear the single currency
Article Abstract:
It is possible that the City of London's position as the leading financial centre in Europe will eventually be lost. This possibility seems very remote at present, especially as almost all the leading continental European institutions involved in investment banking and capital market activities are establishing a presence in the City of London. However, its influence is likely to wane with the creation of European economic and monetary union.

Dealing with extremes of market behaviour
Article Abstract:
There is growing enthusiasm for the creation of some form of international fixed exchange rate system, particularly among policy makers in the Far East. It is possible to understand why this approach may appear attractive, but adopting an international fixed exchange rate system would actually be very misguided. A better solution would be to improve transparency and supervision and to consider more appropriate macroeconomic policy.
