Don't write off the City just yet
Article Abstract:
Some observers have predicted that the City of London will lose its position as Europe's leading financial centre. If this really were to happen, there would be significant implications for the rest of the UK economy, as the City of London contributes around 20 billion pounds sterling a year to the economy. However, the future of the City of London may not be as bleak as some commentators suggest. Liffe, the futures and options exchange, is certainly facing competitive pressure from abroad, but the situation of the Stock Exchange is very different.

SE signs up for single European bourse
Article Abstract:
A memorandum of understanding has been signed between the stock exchanges in London, England, and Frankfurt, Germany. The two exchanges will form a 50/50 joint venture, and will cooperate to develop a pan-European stock market for the largest 300 European companies. They plan to invite other stock exchanges to join them. They will initially focus on establishing an administrative structure for the joint venture, and will then begin work on harmonizing the market rules and codes of practice which govern their largest stocks.

Exchange set to curb rogue trading in blue chips
Article Abstract:
The London Stock Exchange has experienced a number of difficulties with its Sets electronic order-driven trading system. The system has performed well from a technical point of view, but there has been a serious problem with discrepancies between how traders actually use it and how the Stock Exchange would wish traders to use it. The Exchange has intervened directly in market trading in order to address fears of 'rogue' closing prices on New Year's Eve 1997.
