Conservatives fight the enemy within
Article Abstract:
It is unlikely that the UK Conservative party will win the next general election. However, it is not impossible, as there is still some time to go before the election takes place and the economy is showing signs of growth. The main factor which will hamper the party's prospects of winning is that many Conservatives no longer regard winning the election as important. They place more emphasis on the UK's attitude to the European Union in general and to EMU in particular. The party lacks unified self-belief, and this may prove to be its downfall.

The last Tory prime minister?
Article Abstract:
There are certain elements within the Conservative party who are keen to see John Major removed as prime minister, believing that this would revive the party's fortunes in the run-up to the next general election. In fact, the opposite would be the case. John Major is the Conservative politician who has the best chance of uniting the party and bringing it through the general election. Removing him could mark the end of Conservative government as it is now understood.

The New Tories: busy striking a pose
Article Abstract:
There are signs that a New Conservative Party is emerging. Supporters of this development are strongly opposed to any UK involvement in European issues, and are also against extensive welfare provision. Prime minister John Major now looks likely to face a challenge to his leadership of the party, and the New Conservatives are planning how they will reshape the party after the defeat in the next general election which they now see as inevitable.
