Cop shows play a part in policing by consent
Article Abstract:
Significant changes have taken place over recent years in the television portrayal of law and order in the UK. Early television programmes featuring the work of the police were rather cosy and moralistic, but this has now changed, with latest police drama series not hesitating to show police violence and corruption. This in turn has a significant impact on how ordinary people view police work. Television also has an influence on courtroom lawyers and the police.

'I did nothing at all..' - defence or confession
Article Abstract:
UK law does not generally oblige people to take action to help others or to ensure that another person is not under a misapprehension when entering into a contract. However, those who negligently cause others to be in danger are seen in law as owing a duty of care to anyone who seeks to rescue them. There are certain situations where failure to act will be seen in law as a criminal offence, such as failing to provide a specimen of breath to a police officer.

The long arm of the warden
Article Abstract:
Some observers believe that civilian patrols could play a valuable role in law enforcement in the UK, particularly in areas such as disputes between neighbours and petty vandalism. However, others warn that such incidents often become serious unless they are handled by people who are professionally accountable for what happens. Those determined to be involved in criminal activity are unlikely to be deterred by civilian patrols.
