We must learn the secret of living together
Article Abstract:
A report from think-tank Demos indicates that mixed-tenure housing, communities in which social housing is mixed with private housing, has not been successful in the UK. The main problem is that people from different social groups simply do not wish to mix. The report's finding is correct, but Demos fails to take account of the fact that mixed communities have more complex goals than simply mixing different social classes. The most important role of mixed-tenure housing communities is to create affordable housing, rather than to participate in social engineering.

Smoking out the hypocrites
Article Abstract:
It is known that many UK politicians smoke cannabis or have done so in the past. For this reason, it wrong that the government continues to regard class B drugs just as negatively as class A drugs. It is very hypocritical of politicians to speak out so strongly in public against cannabis, and they should bear in mind that more than half the population has tried cannabis. Cannabis should not necessarily be legalized immediately, but attitudes to drugs should be in line with the tolerance shown by the police and the legal profession towards cannabis use.

Smoking is still so cool
Article Abstract:
The number of smokers in the UK rose for the first time in 1998 since 1972, even though there is widespread awareness of the dangers of smoking. This may be because smoking continues to receive extensive media coverage, ensuring that it remains a high public profile. Furthermore, the government has become involved in two tobacco-related scandals, highlighting the power of cigarettes. Considerable efforts are being made to develop ways of helping people to give up smoking, but these will never be very successful until smoking stops being fashionable.
