Cost pressures keep safety on the sidelines
Article Abstract:
Director-general of the Health and Safety Executive John Rimington claims that there are less accidents in the British workplace than in the rest of Europe. British legislation is more forceful than European regulations. High levels of sub-contracting in construction and agriculture mean neglect of safety measures for dangerous work. Unions object to the lack of inspectors and low number of prosecutions. Possible fines have been increased from 2,000 to 20,000 pounds sterling in 1992.

Delivering the workers for Blair
Article Abstract:
The news that Jack Dromey, the national officer of the Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU), is to stand for leadership of the union has caused concern among some observers, who fear that the union would come too much under the influence of Labour party leader Tony Blair if it was led by Dromey. There are also fears that the union would become too powerful, making Dromey a figure of public prominence in the same style as union leaders in the 1960s and 1970s.
