The battle on the building sites
Article Abstract:
The new French national library has come under a series of attacks from the Gaullist Leader Jacques Chirac and other critics. The design of the building was approved by the library managers in Feb 1992. The library will consist of 4 'L'-shaped glass towers, 79 metres high. The architect is Dominique Perrault and the library will cost 800 million pounds sterling to build. Sun-sensitive blinds will protect the books stored in the glass towers and the air conditioning system will circulate through all parts of the building to avoid bacterial damage. Anti-flooding measures are satisfactory.

Rural France presses the panic button
Article Abstract:
Rural Co-ordination is a militant farmers' defence association in France. In La Romieu near Toulouse, Gers, France about 30% of farms were defaulting on loans. Reform of the EC Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), which aims to undo subsidies and remove food mountains, can produce bankruptcy. Rural Co-ordination has about 10,000 members including non-farmers who live in rural areas. They expect the number of farmers to be halved by the reforms, creating wild countryside instead of cultivated land.
