Botanist's life taken by land he defended
Article Abstract:
Andrew Lees, a leading figure in Friends of the Earth, died recently in Madagascar on a trip to gather information for a campaign to stop a plan to mine in coastal regions there. The remote area where he was exploring has dense, almost impenetrable jungle, and it is thought that he collapsed from heat exhaustion or a heart attack. Locals discovered his body fairly soon, but did not report it for some days as they fear the spirits of the dead. Lees' death will serve to attract considerable international attention to environmental issues in Madagascar.
