Courtroom technology on trial
Article Abstract:
Video recordings may be used to present witnesses' testimony in court, but poor quality can make this inadequate. A live television link at the Central Criminal Court and 47 court centres in England and Wales lets a child give evidence without seeing the defendant. The judge has a control panel and two screens. Some barristers feel this removes reality and puts the prosecution at a disadvantage. However, it is better for the child. Technology also helps the deaf with a transcript from a computer screen called the Palantype. Legal Information Exchange sends legal documents 100 times faster than by faxes.

Provision for a pension
Article Abstract:
Judges complained about the Judicial Pensions and Retirement Bill which reduced the value of their public sector pension and introduced compulsory retirement at 70. Barristers usually have a private pension plan, but some expect to become eligible for a pension by becoming a judge. It is unusual for chambers to have staff benefits. Firms of solicitors do have occupational pension schemes. The Solicitors Staff Pension Fund, Southend, England, helps small firms and has a personal pension plan for solicitors and barristers.

Equitable may face another legal fight
Article Abstract:
The High Court in the UK has ruled that Equitable is within its rights to alter how much pension its policyholders receive. However, some industry experts feel that this ruling is incorrect. If the ruling is not overturned, large numbers of policies purchased before 1981 were sold illegally and are thus null and void. Pensions lawyers are concerned about the way the ruling appears to be rewriting the legal basis under which these contracts were sold.
