Cranky goes to Hollywood
Article Abstract:
Science fiction writer Philip K. Dick, a schizophrenic who addressed complex identity issues and psychosis, has begun to attract considerable attention from Hollywood filmmakers. His stories deal with ideas, and therefore give directors considerable freedom. This is seen clearly in 'Blade Runner,' 'Total Recall' and 'Screamers,' the best known Dick adaptations. Steven Spielberg is now planning to film an adaptation of the Dick story 'Minority Report.' It is likely that, like other filmmakers, Spielberg will eliminate the most difficult, and therefore the most interesting, elements of the story.

Gangsters behind the camera
Article Abstract:
The Russian film industry is facing an uncertain future. This is mainly because the mafia has become increasingly involved with the industry during the 1990s. It has found films to be a convenient way of laundering money, and is also using films to promote its views. No new technicians and filmmakers have been trained, and many older technicians have left the industry for better jobs. However, there are now indications that the industry may be able to recover.
