Dachau tries to cast off shadow of death
Article Abstract:
Businesses in Dachau, Germany, are keen to improve the town's image. The town attracts large numbers of visitors, but they go only to the site of the concentration camp and do not spend any money in local shops. The town is losing its traditional industries, and is finding it hard to attract businesses from other parts of Germany. Marketing executive Thomas Seibold, whose management consultancy has been hired to relaunch Dachau, believes that the town must become a small congress centre.

Berlin's red rag tears ahead
Article Abstract:
Media concern Bertelsmann has invested DM25 million in the relaunch of Berliner Zeitung, the former Communist newspaper. It is now hoped that this newspaper can become a national German newspaper. Efforts are being made to focus on debate about politics, culture and society, rather than on Berlin, Germany, and on entertainment. Circulation has already risen from 216,000 to 222,000, and there are now plans to create a network of bureaux in Germany's 16 federal states.

Berlin rebuilt by low-wage British labour
Article Abstract:
The use of British and Irish labourers on building sites in Berlin, Germany, has prompted strong opposition from local people. The main concern is that these labourers are being paid much lower wages than locals would receive. German trade unions are now planning to strike in defence of the interests of German workers, who they feel are being exposed to unemployment because of the use of British and Irish labourers.
