Daggers drawn as Black Leather Jackets take on the Blue Rinses
Article Abstract:
The UK Crime Writers Association (CWA) has become divided between crime writers who favour a traditional, conservative approach and those who prefer to present a tougher, more shocking crime environment. This split is reflected in the fact that Chmn Janet Laurence is facing a challenge from Ian Rankin, who writes strong murder fiction in tough settings. The conflict within the CWA can be seen as reflecting conflict within UK culture as a whole between tradition and modernism.

Article Abstract:
A herbaceous border can be a really attractive feature in a garden, as long as it is situated against an appropriate backing. It needs to be at least 20 ft long and 10 ft deep in order to be effective, and looks best when contrasted with straight edges, paths or hedging. It requires a certain amount of work, but need not be too time-consuming. However, to some people the herbaceous border is simply one manifestation of the snobbery associated with gardening in the UK.
