Lottery casts chill over cash 'competitors.' (National Lottery takes money away from charities)

The UK government has cut the levy which charities pay to the Exchequer in response to concerns expressed by pools companies about the serious impact which the National Lottery is having on their income. Since the launch of the National Lottery, there has been a sharp fall in the proportion of the population giving to charity, and individual donations have declined by 71 million pounds sterling.

The glass bell-tower opened in Basildon, England, by the Queen in Mar 1999 has been the subject of considerable controversy. John Mowlem, which built the tower, has now started legal action against the parochial church council of St Martin of Tours, the church to which Canon Lionel Webber, the driving force behind the project, is attached.
