Danger blood protein to stay on sale
Article Abstract:
The Department of Health announced on 24 July 1998 that a blood product called albumin will continue to be used to treat critically ill patients in the UK despite claims that it is responsible for hundreds of deaths. Albumin is used to treat burns and shock and is given to around 100,000 patients in the UK every year to replace lost fluid. However research has shown that it increases the risk of death by 6% as it is possible for the product to leak out of the capillaries and into the spaces between cells. This can cause the tissues to go soggy and if it occurs in the lungs it can cause breathing difficulties.
