Standing in for the prof
Article Abstract:
Many UK universities are increasingly using postgraduate students to teach undergraduates as funding problems become more serious. Tenured staff are under great pressure to publish larger volumes of high quality research, and this leaves them less time to teach undergraduates. Some observers believe that the widespread use of postgraduate teaching benefits both postgraduates and undergraduates. However, many postgraduates feel that their own research work is suffering, and would not teach undergraduates if they were not in financial difficulties.

Balance study and security - and boost your career
Article Abstract:
Most of the universities in London, England, offer educational opportunities to people who are already in work and wish to boost their career prospects. There are many short and part-time courses that can be fitted around a job, and this gives the student a valuable element of financial security. At City University's Business School, for example, there is an Executive Training section offering tailored programmes and intensive courses.

Whose school is it anyway?
Article Abstract:
School governors have attracted considerable media attention recently in the UK, especially as concern grows about how to deal with disruptive pupils. They have to deal with a great deal of stress, even though they are working only in a voluntary capacity, and often face conflict with parents. They are often responsible for a very large budget, and have to adapt to new roles, such as hearing appeals against exclusion.
