Frank Barber

Article Abstract:

Journalist Frank Barber left school before the age of 15 to work in a solicitor's office. He worked on local newspapers before becoming a sub-editor on the News Chronicle. He subsequently reported from Cyprus, the Congo and the Soviet Union. Following the collapse of the News Chronicle, he worked as a freelance for the BBC's External Service. He later became head of current affairs talks at the BBC, but also wrote for the Observer and the Sunday Times.

Article Abstract:

New BBC Director-General Greg Dyke is attracting extensive publicity as he assumes his responsibilities. He has stated that he plans to bring a new ethos to the BBC, and some senior executives have expressed fears about job security. He will also act as BBC Broadcast Chief Executive from Dec 1999, and will thus be in a position to become directly involved in the running of BBC1 and BBC2. He will also be able to implement changes more rapidly than had been anticipated.
