Deep waters surround lands of opportunity
Article Abstract:
Private investors should be aware that investing in emerging markets can be extremely risky. However, emerging markets could also offer significant prospects for long-term growth. When considering emerging market investments, it is best to begin by looking at general issues, such as interest rates and economic growth. Attention can then be given to industrial sectors and specific companies operating within them. Priority should be given to companies with real earnings growth that can finance expansion from their own funds.

Keep ahead of inflation in retirement
Article Abstract:
Financial advisers generally believe that income-generating investments should be given a higher priority as the client becomes older. For clients in their 70s, interest earning investment should account for 70% of their overall investments, with equity funds accounting for 30%. A more even balance is acceptable if the investment income is not required for day-to-day expenses. A portfolio giving high priority to personal equity plans and tax-exempt special savings accounts is advisable.

Something old and something new from City professionals
Article Abstract:
Many fund managers believe that it will continue to be beneficial to focus on growth businesses in 1997. These include Cairn Energy, which was very successful in 1996 and is now a significant independent oil company. Other companies with potential to see considerable rises in their share price are British Gas, SkyePharma, Sainsbury and British Aerospace. There were very variable performances for stocks selected by fund managers on behalf of the Independent newspaper in 1996.
