Deer hunters join Africa's forgotten war
Article Abstract:
Ordinary people who have traditionally worked as bush hunters are now joining Sierra Leone's Civilian Defence Committee, which is working to protect locals in the south of the country who have become caught up in fighting between government troops and the Revolutionary United Front. Ordinary people do not trust government troops at all, and believe that they now have to take their defence into their own hands. The government also relies heavily on soldiers from Guinea, Ghana and Nigeria.

Beheading stirs Nigerian tension
Article Abstract:
A radical group known as the Muslim Brothers is fuelling a wave of Islamic renewal in Nigeria, where Muslims are increasingly feeling that their views are not being taken into consideration and that Islam is under threat. The murder of Ibgo trader Gideo Akaluka in the city of Kano in Dec 1994 and rioting there in May 1995 have further heightened existing tensions between young Hausa Muslims and Christian Igbo.
