Defiant Serbs torch villages as Europe braces itself for war
Article Abstract:
Serb forces continue to attack Albanian villages in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, with President Slobodan Milosevic and the Serb parliament both having rejected calls for a ceasefire. It now seems increasingly likely that Nato will launch air strikes against Yugoslav targets. US envoy Richard Holbrooke has admitted that his desperate final attempt to avert large-scale conflict in Kosovo has failed, and has stated that Milosevic is fully aware of the consequences of his refusal to agree to a ceasefire or to the deployment of a Nato-led peacekeeping force in Kosovo.

'No sanctuary,' warns Nato as Serbs are bombarded again
Article Abstract:
Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic remains defiant in the face of Nato air strikes designed to force him to accept a peace settlement for Kosovo, Yugoslavia. Nato has launched a second round of extensive air strikes, and there are now fears that a wider conflict could emerge in the southern Balkans, prompting the largest war in Europe since the second world war. Western politicians are strongly aware of the need to ensure that public opinion is in favour of a long-term military commitment to the region.
