Democrats in a shrine to evil
Article Abstract:
Romania's new centre-right government is uncertain what to do with the 'House of the People,' an enormous building in the centre of Bucharest, Romania, which was built in the 1980s by former Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. At present, the lower house of parliament is operating from the 3,000-room white marble building, but the building has very negative associations for many ordinary Romanians. The construction of the building involved forcing 150,000 people to move from their homes and the demolition of more than one-fifth of the old centre of Bucharest.

Poles apart: Church vs choice
Article Abstract:
The first trial of people accused of contravening Poland's anti-abortion law of 1993 has attracted great public interest and media speculation. It has become the focus of the conflict between the various forces which are shaping the moral climate of post-Communist Poland. The Roman Catholic Church would hail a guilty verdict as supporting its anti-abortion stance, while women's groups and pro-choice campaigners would oppose such a verdict as a sign of the growing control of the Church over moral and ethical issues.
