Jewish survivors confront a past shaped by a devil
Article Abstract:
Mr Josef Franz Leo Schwammberger, 79, is on trial in Stuttgart for murdering 45 Jews and ordering the killing of over 3,000 others when he was an SS commander of labour camps in Poland, but he claims to remember nothing of the period 1941-1944 although he recalls everything before and after the war. Several witnesses have been flown in from other countries to give evidence of his cruelty but he is impassive. Mr Schwammberger escaped after the war and fled to Argentina. The German government is ensuring this trial is conducted well, as it may be the last Nazi war criminal case.

Discreet, and devoted to dialogue
Article Abstract:
The confrontational style of corporate governance, which was seen at the recent British Gas annual general meeting, can never be successful, according to Geoff Lindey, chairman of the investment committee of the National Association of Pension Funds and head of UK institutional investment at JP Morgan Investment Management. He believes that institutional shareholders and fund managers should be more active in fulfilling their responsibilities towards the companies in which they have invested, but that they should avoid confrontation.
