Denis Goacher
Article Abstract:
Poet, translator, actor and broadcaster Denis Goacher received private lessons with an actor as a child. He started acting at an early age, first at the Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham, England, and then at St James's and the Albany in London, England. He became involved in a range of ventures, including acting on stage and radio and translating for John Barton at the Royal Shakespeare Company. He became Ezra Pound's secretary in 1953, and established a lifelong friendship with Basil Bunting.

Jon Silkin
Article Abstract:
Poet Jon Silkin read English as a Gregory Fellow at Leeds University, England, from 1958. He was offered financial support for Stand, a magazine he had launched in 1952, by the North Eastern Association for the Arts, and in 1965 moved to Newcastle, England. The magazine and Northern House, a publishing house he set up for poetry pamphlets, played a key role in encouraging talented new writers. He also gained a strong reputation for his knowledge of the poets of the First World War.

Allen Curnow
Article Abstract:
Poet Allen Curnow was born in Timaru, New Zealand, in 1911. He studied at St John's Theological College in Auckland, New Zealand, but decided against entering the Anglican ministry. He worked as a journalist on the Christchurch Press in the 1930s and 1940s, and in 1951 became a lecturer in English at the University of Auckland.
