Designs for a roaring success
Article Abstract:
Raked floors help present a picture to the audience, according to stage designer Richard Hudson, whose visual aesthetic is strongly characterized by raked floors. He emphasizes that visual simplicity has been the key concept guiding his work on the stage version of Disney's 'The Lion King.' He feels that his work has changed substantially during the 1990s. He still works with the same general aesthetic of dividing space and altering the shape of things, but believes that his approach has become more refined.

Between heaven and earth
Article Abstract:
Twyla Sharp is a choreographer who also plays the violin, viola and piano, but she does not class herself as a musician. She has used both classical and popular music in her works. Some commentators classify her work as postmodern, but she disagrees. She sees postmodern work as following something, while she classes some of her pieces as fundmental. She carries out extensive research before developing her works, and sees her work as a faith and ritual.

Breathing in the Sussex air
Article Abstract:
Glyndebourne Opera differs from other opera companies in its approach to using chorus singers. It tends to use young singers who then go on to pursue a solo career, rather than those who wish to be career choristers. Almost all the roles are 'covered' by the choristers, rather than having 'name' understudies. There is a turnover of around 30% a year among chorus singers, and considerable effort is put into seeking new talent from music colleges.
