Desperately seeking modern
Article Abstract:
The ICA in London, England, is currently staging an exhibition entitled 'OMA Rem Koolhaas Living.' This is the first major exhibition of the work of architect Rem Koolhaas to be held in the UK. It gives an insight into the experimental working methods Koolhaas uses, and investigates the constantly changing boundaries between the private and public domain. Giant television screens suspended from the ceiling show films of Koolhaas and his constructive processes.

Glasgow's other architect
Article Abstract:
Architect Alexander Thomson, who died in 1875, had a significant impact on the architecture of Glasgow, Scotland. He acted as a link between Neo-Classicism and the structurally innovative work of Sullivan and the Chicago School. His work is characterized by deliberately repetitive and derivative decoration. He never left Glasgow, but his work has Mesopotamian, Far Eastern, Egyptian and Indian motifs. His civic and private commissions are all clearly human.

Such a hotchpotch of porridges
Article Abstract:
There are certain common characteristics of the architecture of places of incarceration, such as prisons and towers. These include functionalism, with architectural form often not being concerned with aesthetic considerations. The UK's Victorian prisons appear daunting and authoritarian, but are in fact almost beautiful in their dimensions. Modern prison architecture tends to be much more austere, despite the policy of making them more humane.
