Did you have a nice time getting into school, dear?
Article Abstract:
UK schools are trying to improve security, following the massacre at Dunblane Primary School, Dunblane, Scotland, in June 1996, and an attack by a man with a machete at St. Luke's Primary School, Wolverhampton on July 1996, without turning their buildings into jails. It will cost schools several thousand pounds for a minimum level of security, and there is not expected to be finance available until April 1997. A school likely to be the safest in the UK is St. Luke's Kingston-upon-Thames, a building which opened at the beginning of 1996, whose architects incorporated a number of security features.

Ethics man takes on the fat cats
Article Abstract:
The tax evasion scheme in which top executives of the National Grid were involved, transferring shares worth a great deal of money to their wives, would have been regarded in the 1980s as an acceptable way of doing business in a free market. However, attitudes have changed in the 1990s, and schemes of this kind are now seen as unfair. The controversy over this issue highlights the large gap which has opened up between ordinary people and those who lead industry and government.

Who wants to be a millionaire?
Article Abstract:
Young people have started to realise that it can be very hard to get a job with prospects if they leave school at 16 with few qualifications. They are keen to enter further education to improve their prospects, recognising that they will always have to suffer a hard life if they can only get unskilled work. They want a better life than that of their parents, who are often in temporary, poorly paid employment.
