The noble art left reeling on the ropes
Article Abstract:
Supporters of boxing have always defended it by saying that it develops self-reliance, self-control, physical courage and sportsmanship in young boys. However, the recent case of Gerald McClellan, who has had to have brain surgery after a match with Nigel Benn, and earlier incidents in which boxers have died, have damaged the sport's image. There are now renewed calls for boxing to be banned, but some observers believe that this would just encourage people to fight illegally, which would be a lot more dangerous.

How scarves and woollies slaughtered a trade
Article Abstract:
Protest action has had a severe impact on the UK's 200 million pounds sterling livestock export trade over recent months. The restriction of the trade will cause a surplus of beef on the domestic market in 1997, according to the National Farmers' Union, and UK farmers will suffer considerable financial hardship. The issue is unusual in that it has brought together radical vegetarians, sentimental animal lovers and animal liberationists to fight for a single cause.

Triumph of Hope over adversity
Article Abstract:
David Hope, who is to be the next Archbishop of York, has recently become a target of the gay activist group OutRage!, which is trying to force him to admit to being homosexual. He has already been obliged to admit that his sexuality is ambiguous, although he remains committed to priestly celibacy. Most observers believe that he is standing up well to the pressure, and his dignified approach has attracted public sympathy.
