Diana, David Beckham and a nation in emotional turmoil
Article Abstract:
The UK has been rebranding itself over recent years. This has been an organic process, rather than being imposed from the top. The week following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, was a particularly significant part in this process, indicating that Britons are no longer afraid to express their emotions. The 1998 World Cup has also been surrounded with considerable emotion, but this is more a thuggish nationalism. Some commentators have criticized this new emphasis on emotions. Certainly, there is a need to be clear about just what is being expressed as Britons become more emotional.

Britain is unbuttoning, but it will not bring the changes many expect
Article Abstract:
It is not possible to identify a direct political equivalent for the public reaction in the UK to the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. It is clear that the reaction to her death marked a significant development in national identity, especially in terms of moving away from the old cultural order. However, this cannot be interpreted as an abandonment of the individualism of the 1980s, and there is no clear sense of a new beginning.
