Teach British? What's that?
Article Abstract:
Recent remarks by Dr Nicholas Tate, the chief executive of the School Curriculum and Assessment Authority, about teaching children of all cultural and ethnic backgrounds about what it means to be British have caused considerable controversy. Against a background of rapid social change, which breaks down identities and moralities, there is clearly an argument for using the school curriculum to encourage children's understanding of cultural issues and boost their sense of identity. However, there are very differing views on what form of culture should be taught in schools.

Our millions create their poverty
Article Abstract:
European Community (EC) money lent through the European Iron and Steel Confederation has funded the Carajas railway line connecting the world's largest iron ore deposits to the deep-water port of Sao Luis in Brazil. The forests there are being torn down to make charcoal and this in turn is used to extract iron from the ore. This means the EC can get 13.6 million tons of cheap iron every year, half the imports needed. The local workers, including many children, are working in diabolical conditions for a pittance. Aid and support is badly needed there from such as Oxfam.
