Direct line to profits
Article Abstract:
Koc Holding of Turkey and SBC Communications of the US are said to be making a joint bid for shares in Turk Telekom in Turkey, which is being privatised from the fourth quarter 1998. The successful bidder will benefit from access to one of the world's 12 largest telephone networks and a company with profits of around US$ 1.2bn, expected to reach US$ 1.5bn in 1998. At the same time, the network only reaches around 25% of the population, and Turk Telekom is seeking to remedy this with a major investment plan. It expects to add another 2.5mn subscriber lines by the year 2000, having already added 2mn in 1997. Some 200,000 cordless telephone lines are being installed in remote areas, and a third satellite is due to be added in 1999 under a joint venture with Aerospatiale of France. Meanwhile, mobile telephony in Turkey is also growing quickly, boosted by licences which were awarded to Telsim and Turkcell in April 1998. Telsim expects to have 2mn-3mn subscribers by the year 2000, and has awarded a US$ 500mn contract to Motorola to supply GSM infrastructure. This will increase cellular range to 75 miles from 22 miles.
