Let the Martians come to us
Article Abstract:
There is great enthusiasm among scientists and politicians in the US for detailed exploration of Mars. However, there is also a widespread awareness that sending people to Mars would be extremely expensive and would probably not produce information which is not already available. It would take a year to get to Mars, and simply travelling there would present a large number of practical difficulties. Against this background, it is likely to be a very long time before extensive exploration of Mars is feasible.

Taste of things to come: the apple gene that will put the bite on foreigners
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom genetic engineering researchers are seeking to map apple genes in order to improve the fruit and help the industry fight foreign competition. Malic acid is one component which contributes to an apple's taste, but the aroma is a mix of 250 compounds and it is difficult to select genes to improve the apple. The research will yield results in a decade to 15 years from 1997. Consumers require clear labelling of fruit, especially since there are concerns about genetically altered products.

With portfolio, without magic wand
Article Abstract:
Science and related issues are given a high priority by the UK government, according to minister for science and technology Ian Taylor. The science budget has increased by 20% in real terms since 1987, and considerable efforts are being made to encourage improvements in the standards of mathematics and science teaching in schools. The government has protected and developed the country's science base, and care has been taken to remain at the forefront of scientific developments.
