Direct marketing gets back in business
Article Abstract:
The UK direct marketing industry was worth 6.1 billion pounds sterling in 1996, up by 11% from 1995, according to the Direct Marketing Association. Direct marketing is rapidly shedding its negative image as it takes a more professional and targeted approach. Direct marketing is now filtering throughout the entire advertising process, with many ordinary television and press advertisements containing some type of response element. Direct marketing's future seems very positive as increasing emphasis is placed on one-to-one communication.

Article Abstract:
The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England, is holding an exhibition entitled 'The Power of Posters.' This covers the history of posters since the 1870s, dividing the posters into sections entitled Pleasure and Leisure, Commerce and Communication and Protest and Propaganda. Those who organized the exhibition were motivated to do so by the fact that they believe that posters are becoming more important as other means of communication fragment.

Polyphonic perversity: the facts
Article Abstract:
Norwegian jazz saxophonist Jan Garbarek is one of the few non-US performers who is currently exerting an influence on developments in modern jazz music. He has for many years been working outside his local jazz environment, and now tours extensively. He has abandoned conventional jazz frameworks, although he still frequently works with standard instrumentations. He has a very experimental approach, and aims to remove music from all disciplines.
