New Labour forced into old bottles
Article Abstract:
There has been considerable central input into the UK Labour party's selection of potential parliamentary candidates for the forthcoming general election. There is no single figure in the party who visits local constituencies to ensure that the most appropriate person is selected, but party leader Tony Blair's office is kept closely informed about selection proceedings. Applications are assessed by David Gardner, the party's head of organisation, and recommendations are drawn up before the finer details of selection are handled by the local party organisation.

Now the heat is on Mandelson
Article Abstract:
Allegations that political lobbyists had privileged access to UK government ministers have caused particular embarrassment for Minister without Portfolio Peter Mandelson, who has for some time had close links with political adviser Roger Liddle, accused of offering introductions to ministers. Mandelson will now face questions from the Conservative party about his connections with lobbyists. Derek Draper, a lobbyist, has denied stating that ministers' decisions could be altered in return for money.

Are these lads too bad to go to school?
Article Abstract:
The recent case of Richard Wilding, a 13-year-old who was excluded from school after 30 alleged violent or disruptive incidents, has highlighted the problems associated with dealing with pupils who behave in this way. In some cases, the pupil concerned feels that there is a justified reason for the behaviour, such as bullying by other pupils. They often feel that teachers do not understand them, and that they have not been given the opportunity to put their side of the story.
