Disability Act may finally get some muscle
Article Abstract:
The UK government has made a firm commitment to give greater assistance to disabled people seeking to enforce their rights under the Disability Discrimination Act introduced at the end of 1996. It plans to establish a Disability Rights Commission, and will also create a task force to draw up recommendations for wide-reaching civil rights for the disabled. The National Disability Council has welcomed these moves, but emphasizes that the Disability Rights Commission should not copy the structures set up in the 1970s to combat discrimination on the basis of gender and race.

The boss dons kid gloves
Article Abstract:
The UK government has recently made it a criminal offence to employ someone who is not permitted to work in the UK. This places the responsibility for employment of illegal immigrants with employers, rather than with the individual, as in the past. An employer must ask to see one of several documents specified in the Home Office 'Guidance for employers' in order to establish a defence under the new legislation. However, these will only provide defence if they appear to relate to the applicant.
