Disciplined approach
Article Abstract:
The Jamaican government is determined to deal with the difficulties that have been afflicting the island's financial institutions since global credit ceilings and foreign exchange control were lifted in the early 1990s. The large, established banks have managed to retain a strong market presence, and some have attracted large amounts in new deposits as nervousness about the financial sector has increased. National Investment Bank of Jamaica is keen to back new investment schemes, while Bank of Nova Scotia is avoiding unnecessary risks.

Strong growth is backed by solid banking
Article Abstract:
Foreign participation has had a significant impact on the Hungarian banking sector, with around three-quarters of the country's banks now in the control of western European financial institutions. It is likely that the number of banks in Hungary will decline in the foreseeable future as mergers and consolidation take place. Indeed, Magyar Kulkereskedelmi Bank Chmn and Chief Executive Tamas Erdei believes that there will be between five and eight universal banks in Hungary by 2001 to 2002.

Banking's glitter begins to fade
Article Abstract:
UK banks have performed very strongly since 1996, and banking shares have become very attractive to investors. However, this situation could change as competition in the sector becomes fiercer and the regulatory climate becomes more strict. Some observers believe that the popularity of bank shares is already declining, particularly in the light of forecasts of an economic slowdown, which would bring rising bad debts and falling profits for banks.
