The UK does not have a clear policy on war graves located in the North Sea and at other coastal sites. This means that no action can be taken against divers who remove items from these sites. Most divers are opposed to the removal of items from war graves, but they also emphasize that government policy has in the past permitted commercial salvage on vessels where large numbers of sailors died. Of the 24 submarines that have been found in the North Sea, six have been pillaged, prompting protests from German U-boat veterans.

Democracy activist Rachel Goldwyn has been sentenced to seven years with hard labour after chaining herself to a lamp-post, shouting pro-democracy slogans and singing a pro-democracy song in Rangoon, Burma. The sentence is the maximum possible for the charge. It will take at least two months for an appeal to be heard. Members of her family have expressed surprise at the sentence, as they had been led to understand that she would be shown clemency.
