Do a little each day and interest multiples
Article Abstract:
The Kumon way of Maths teaching is being successfully used in the UK. About 50 Kumon Centres have been opened serving 1,500 students since 1991. Kumon is the Japanese private tuition system which relies on repitition, daily small quantities of timed and rewards. Precisely graded worksheets allow children to commence at exactly the right level. The system covers algebra, computation and different levels of calculus from toddler to A-level stage. Toddlers play with number boards and sort out numerals. Kumon is not competitive and is not a classroom substitute.

Talk to me as professionals and I'll respond
Article Abstract:
Secretary of State for Education John Patten met teachers' unions but would rather speak to professional bodies. He feels trade unions deal with pay and conditions, whereas professional issues should be discussed by bodies such as the health service royal colleges. Teachers could establish a Royal College of Secondary Headteachers, a Royal College of Primary Teachers and royal colleges for subject specialists. This would improve respect for teachers.
